She had seen him again that day when Master had taken her out for her afternoon ride. Standing of the top of Moel Peak,
proud and strong the black stallion had stood watching the young sweet mare as her Master had ridden her through the
valley below. Ever since he had caught her scent on the wind she had infatuated him. Her long golden well groom mane
falling over her big shy eyes, as her over long tail swished in the breeze. She was beautiful, a golden mare, well groomed
and well cared for by her Master. He has heard the Master call her hunnysuckle "his hunnysuckle" a sweet human name
for such a beautiful creature. To him the wild black stallion that no human had been able to tame she would be "his princess"
for the black stallion was know to all horses in the area as The Black Prince.
Hunnysuckle had first seen the black stallion by the beech tree on top of hill over looking her paddock.
Even thought she could only see his silhouette against the sky he appeared the biggest, strongest most handsome
looking beast she had ever seen. She had been tethered waiting to be groomed, wanting to see more of him she had pulled
at her leather tethers, but heard her Master approaching. She was not only a well cared for and well-loved pony, she was
also well trained, and pulling against her restraints was not the way to act. She lowered her head, her long mane falling
over her eyes. "There, there hunny, what's got into you" the Master stroked his beloved horses back. She tossed her
head, swishing her mane out of her eyes and looked up to see if the stallion was still there. Her heart sank; he had gone,
was it her imagination or was he real?
The black stallion had tried to get the golden mare out of his thoughts. She was well cared for, well loved, why would she want to leave all that to run wild with him to be his princess? He has watched her training in the dressage ring, holding her head high brining her legs up high, "not natural, stupid human dancing" Prince has thought, but she was compelling, she was proud and willing and so graceful of movement. How Prince wished he could see her gallop across the moors. He had seen her at full gallop, but the Master was on her back, riding her out hard and swift. She was fast, for a mare, and strong taking her Masters weight with ease. Had she ever been free? Had she ever felt the pleasure of racing free with no bit in the mouth, no rider on her back? She tossed her head as she passed Moel Peak. Yes he was there, the black stallion she had glimpsed so many times over the past few months. "Steady, hunny" she heard her Masters voice as he steadied her. She could smell him on the breeze; she could feel his eyes watching her. It had been like this for weeks and the more it happened the more she wanted to know more. Why was he watching her? Why did he not have a Master? Why did she want to be close to him? He was a wild horse, she was owned and loved, she had been trained since a foal by the kind but firm hand of her Master. She had been keen and willing to work hard and make her Master proud of her. So why was it now that she pulled on her reins when out riding just to get a glimpse of this strange stallion? Over and over, her Master had found himself baffled by his hunnysuckles behaviour. She appeared restless and unhappy. The Master had called the vet out to check her over but as always the vet had said what fine shape she was in and asked what price she was. It had been a running joke between the Master and the vet. Ever since the vet had seen her as a young foal he had asked if she was up for sale, the Master had told him, she was his love and would never be sold. So why was his hunny acting so. In the dressage ring she was forget her routine, when riding she would pull against her reins and had even been difficult to keep her heading in the direction the Master wanted to take. In desperation the Master had started using the crop when out riding to keep her attention. He did not like using force and had trained hunny with love and very little use of the whip or crop. But to allow her to take control whilst out was dangerous, she must remember who is the Master. Prince had first noticed the crop being swished onto her hindquarters, as she veered of path when passing the river. In anger he had reared up and let out a cry. "No one should use a crop on such a beautiful creature as his princess". hunny had felt the crop several times now and had started to associate the sharp sting of the crop with the magnificent stallion. She did not want to disobey her Master, but the sight of the black stallion, his scent on the breeze was to much for her. she could not stop her self looking for him, pulling back, slowing down, fighting for her head so she could look around for him. Hunny heard the sound of the stallion, as the sting of the crop bit into her flesh and she tossed her head, fighting against the reins. She had seen him rear up. She did not know what had got into her but she too reared up, sending her unsuspecting Master falling to the ground. In shock at what she had done she bucked and took off, down the bank of the river away from both her Master and her home. Her reins falling loose tangling with her mane. She galloped for all she was worth, her head full of images, of her Master laying on the ground. Was he hurt, had she killed him? She remembered the wild black stallion as he had reared up in anger at her Masters striking her. Why did he have to come along, why could she not control her urge to be with him. As she slowed her heart beating so fast in her chest she thought it would burst, she tossed her head trying to get the reins free. They had tangled into her mane, and were pulling at her . She whinnied in frustration and sadness. What was she going to do? Prince had seen his princess rear up, he had at first been so proud of her, fighting back. But as the Master had fallen and hunny had cried out in terror at what she had done Prince realised that the beautiful golden mare loved her Master and he had pushed her into this action. Prince watched as hunny had taken to galloping off down the riverbank and he knew he had to act fast. Galloping, he followed her along the opposite bank only stopping long enough to see hunny's Master rise to his feet unhurt. Prince was faster and stronger than hunny, but wanted to give her space and not to startle the poor frightened mare any more. He kept to the far side of the bank and some distance back, able to see the dust from her hooves and her scent on the wind. There was little chance of him losing her. As she slowed he looked for a way of crossing the river, it was summer it was low and easy for him to cross. He waded through, enjoying the cool water after the gallop to keep up with the startled princess. As he approached hunny her coat glistening with sweat, her breathing hard and lingered, he stopped, and he gave out a low quiet greeting so as not to startle her. She turned her head to him; his heart almost broke as he saw her big sad eyes looking at him through her matted and tangled mane. "I have killed Master" her eyes told him. Prince moved closer to her and nuzzled into her neck, reassuring her that her Master was safe. Slowly she calmed and the two horses spent the next few hours in the afternoon sun, eating sweet grass, drinking in the river and enjoying the scent and touch of each other. Hunny had never known the love of a stallion, she wanted him fully but the saddle on her back and the reins tangled in her mane reminded her that she was not free to give herself. Prince wanted to rip the saddle off her back and take her for his princess showing her the joy of living free, but when ever he got close to her she would move away. The smell from the saddle the constant reminder that this was not his princess, but hunnysuckle owned and loved by a human Master. As evening fell, Prince could see in hunny's eye the need for home. He could also see the look of a very lost and sad young mare. Prince tossed his head and let out an ordering whinny and started walking down the riverbank. hunny knew to follow, but she was not sure if the wild stallion was taking her home or to a place that was his. all she knew was she was to follow. As they neared hunny's home her eyes became sadder. she wanted to be home to see her Master, to make sure he was not hurt. She also feared she would never see the stallion again. Prince stopped, gave her a loving look, letting her know that it was as close as he came. He reared up on his hind legs and turned and galloped into the distance without looking back. Hunny watched. She wanted to follow, she wanted to cry out for him but she was an owned horse, her place was with her Master. Slowly she walked back, her head low her eyes sad. "she's here" hunny stopped as she heard the voice of one of her Masters friends "over here". Her Masters friend approached her. hunny did not want him to take hold of her rein, it was tangled in her mane. It would pull and hurt, so she tossed her head and whinnied. The Masters friend stopped in his tracks, "your right about her, she is wild" he said as the Master came running into the clearing. "No she's not wild, are you my hunny" his words were kind, and hunny lowered her head in shame. The Master stroked back her mane from her eyes. "look at the state of you, your in a right mess, come on hunny lets get that saddle off your back and get you fed and watered". The Master took the saddle off before slowly walking her back home. Gently and carefully the reins were taken off and her coat gently brushed. "Come on hunny eat something" he said kindly as she stood still and quiet as he groomed her. She did not want to eat, she did not want to be brushed and stroked, she wanted to be nuzzled by the wild stallion, she wanted to feel his breath on her neck, to feel his teeth playing with her mane, she wanted to be with Prince. That night hunny could not rest. Her stable seem to trap her rather than to keep her safe. She wanted out, she needed to see the sky. She kicked at the stable door, hard with her rear legs, the latch gave way, and she was into her paddock . She walked around it tossing her head in frustration, whinnying loudly and sadly. The Master heard the noise and came running to the paddock. "What are you doing hunny" his words were not kind. His ribs that had been broken in the fall that afternoon had stopped him from sleeping and now the same horse that had thrown him, hurting him was now kicking the stable door down at three in the morning. "What is up with you". His words were angry. hunny moved from him as he tried to take hold of her mane to lead her back, "come on, its too late and I'm in too much pain to play silly games". hunny just kicked up her legs and trotted away from him whinnying and snorting. She did not want to be disobedient, but she did not know how to communicate how unhappy she was, how much she wanted Prince. The Master went into the stable and came back with a training rein and whip, "HERE HUNNY" he cried as he tried to put the rein over her head. She kicked her heels up and set off towards the gate. Not stopping she jumped it in one, the sound of her hooves just catching the top clattering out in the stillness of the night. She did not give any thought to what direction to take, she just took off galloping as hard as she could, free from all of her Masters restraints. "Hunny" the Master cried after her. He loved his golden mare, she was his pride and joy, but the Master was hurting from his injury, frustrated by the lack of sleep and the unusual behaviour of his horse. Starlight his only other horse was now to old to be ridden, so he took off after her on foot. The storm clouds that had been threatening all evening now started to rumble, they too seemed unhappy. Hunny galloped on not wanting to look back, not knowing were she was going. She wanted Prince and cried out for him on the night wind. He had left so finally, why had she not gone with him? The thunder gave out a roaring clap; startling the poor mare even more as she turned direction heading for the woods. Prince was determined to leave hunny alone, it was his presence that had made her act the way she did. What could he offer her, she was a human pony, for fancy competitions and pleasing a Master. He had seen the fear in her eyes when she had seen her Master laying on the ground. He had seen the way she had started to fight against the Master making him use the crop on her. Prince could not bear the thought of her being beaten and unhappy, she was happy before he had come along. He must move on and forget the beautiful golden princess. She was hunnysuckle not princess, the Masters hunnysuckle. The rain started to beat down as the Master ran on in the night, the pain in his ribs making it difficult to breath. "hunny" he cried out. he could not bear the thought of anything happening to her, he had worried all afternoon about her, even when his wife had insisted he went to the hospital he had only agreed when she said that she would arrange for the neighbours to go looking for her. When he had returned from the hospital he had refused to take it easy and insisted on joining the now dwindling search party. Only after she had been found and he had cared for her, did he agree to rest, and only then when he had put in a call to the vet to come and check her over again the following day. Hunny did not notice as she entered into the woods, the tail and hair that was being pulled out as she brushed against the jagged trees. All she knew was her heart was breaking, she wanted to be Prince's but she did not want to hurt Master. Maybe if she ran far enough away they would all forget about her. The rain made it difficult to keep her footing and as the lightening lit up the sky, it made strange images in the woods that startled the already scared pony even more. She ran on blinded by fear. The Master stopped to catch his breath, "hunny" he cried "damn you hunny where are you" he thought he had lost her then as the lightening struck it reflected off some of her golden mane, caught in the trees at the edge of the wood. "Oh hunny" he said stroking the few strands of hair "your in the wood". He wiped the rain off his face, and took a deep breath and started to search again. "hunny" he feebly cried, as the sound of the thunder was all that could be heard above the heavy rain fall. Hunny slowed her heart beating fast and hard. She listened, the thunder clashed once more and she reared up and whinnied with all her worth. She was scared she wanted Prince, she wanted her Master. Was that her Master calling? She stood still and listened. The Master heard her, and changed direction. He thought he saw her in the shadows when the lightening streaked across the sky but he was not sure. The rain in his eyes, the agony of the broken ribs mixed with his frustration but yes it was her. As he approached her she turned and saw him, she wanted to run to him but she wanted Prince. She moved to the right. "hunny still" he shouted, the lightening streaked across the sky and the thunder let out a mighty crash. The storm now directly above them, with the fear of the storm, of never seeing Prince again, princess hunny bucked up on her hind legs. Her Master fearful of being injured more, took the whip in his hand and brought it down on her hind quarters. Hunny cried out in pain and dodged away from the Master. He was scared if he lost this opportunity to capture his sad pony he would never see her again. He took the whip and brought it down hard on her hindquarters, trying to back her up to he could put the training collar around her neck. She moved back confused by her Masters actions. Never had he used the whip on her hard and determined as he was now doing so. Again he struck her, her flesh searing in pain, she let out a cry "Prince, help me". She wanted her stallion, and as she swished her rain soaked mane the Master got the collar around her neck. She pulled at it, she did not understand her need to pull away. The Master tied the other end around the branch. "hunny stop, be calm" he shouted. The rain kept lashing, down the thunder kept rumbling and each time the lightening lit up the sky the Master could see the wildness in the young mares eyes. Princess hunny, pulled hard against the reins holding her to the tree, it dug into her neck, but she did not feel the pain only the need to be free. The Master in frustration and pain repeatedly struck the pony, "still hunny, be still, your going to get hurt" Master caught hold of the training collar close to the mares neck, the touch of his hand on her neck along with the pain on her hind quarters, quietened her. "There, there, my scared little pony, what has got into you" the Master laid his head onto her neck and cried with a mixture of exhaustion pain and relief of securing the wild golden pony. As the storm moved into the distance and the rain eased off, the Master gently untied hunny and slowly walked back to the paddock and stable, "oh hunny, I am worried about you" he said to her. They walked calmly back, as he stroked her neck and face, telling her how much he loved her. Hunny held her head low, kept her eyes cast down. She had tasted freedom with her black stallion Prince, but she was an owned pony, and it was her Master who she loved, and who she must obey, but she would always dream of galloping free of being the golden princess.
